Default More strikes in July

This from the Majorca Daily Bulletin

Quote:
Air traffic controllers call July strike across Spain
1
Spanish air traffic controllers have called partial strikes over two weekends in July - threatening to disrupt some of the busiest travel days for holidaymakers.
The strikes have been called for 11, 12, 25 and 26 July, Spain’s air traffic controller union, La Unión Sindical de Controladores Aéreos (USCA) said yesterday.
The stoppages will take place between 10a.m and 1p.m on 11 and 25 July and and between 5p.m and 8p.m on 12 and 26 July.
The strike is the second such action in as many months after air traffic controllers took action over four days in June in protest at sanctions handed out to 61 air traffic controllers for shutting down Barcelona’s airspace in 2010.

Sanctions
“The USCA thinks that the decision to maintain sanctions against the 61 air traffic controllers is incomprehensible,” the trade union said in a statement released yesterday.
They confirmed the strike days with a tweet, blaming the lack of will by Enaire to reach an agreement.
Enaire, which runs the majority of airports in Spain, fined 61 air traffic controllers from Barcelona Control Centre one month’s salary, as well as suspending them for a month, because of a strike which led to a national emergency in 2010.

Some good news. It looks as if the strike by French Air Traffic Controllers (SNCTA) for 2 & 3 July has been called off.

There weren't many reports on disruptions, but the last time there was a minimum service ordered by the ministry and the strike window was 2 hours instead of the announced 3 hours.

Hope the disruption is very small again and the airlines update their websites as well as the last time.

Same as CathB out on the 11th home 26th as I've said before, daughters late evening flight to Belfast was canceled, the main disruption seems to be the knock on effect for later flights to Europe or UK domestic flights, crew on duty too long, new one not available etc. I just really hope they come to their senses before then and realise the damage that is being done to the tourism sector, after all the Spanish economy is still not in great shape and they might not have a job to strike from.

It looks like the strikes are going ahead, this is from the Nueva huelga de controladores con 300.000 pasajeros en Son Sant Joan » Local » Noticias » Ultima Hora Mallorca

Quote:
New controllers strike with 300,000 passengers in Son Sant Joan

The air traffic controllers strike called by the union USCA for Saturday and Sunday, Son Sant Joan affect about 300,000 passengers. The Development Ministry has set a minimum service of 80% to avoid chaos at airports.

The USCA union has held four days of partial strikes, planned for next July weekend , Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 and Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July. It so happens, according to AENA, who on Saturday the 11th, Palma Airport recorded a new record for passenger traffic, since they exceed 156,000. For the day on Sunday it is expected to pass through the passenger terminal building 137.00. The Union of Air Traffic Controllers Association (USCA), the majority union which represents 90% of the more than 2,000 workers Ático template has called strikes as 61 drivers protest reprimanded in Barcelona and Santiago driver dismissal following the closure of airspace in 2010.

The strike will be held by the partial strikes on 11 and 25, between 10 and 13 hours, and 12 and 26, between 17 and 20 hours.

Fingers crossed that the 80% minimum service set by the ministry will avoid too many delays.

Travelling to Spain this week? We may have bad news for you…

Quote:
...Holidaymakers have been advised to check with their airlines about potential disruptions.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said it’s possible some flights between Ireland and Spain will be affected.

However, the organisation added: “We understand that the strike action will be for short periods and therefore the disruption to services should be limited.

We advise passengers to contact their airlines for more information. ...”

The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) also advised travellers to contact their airlines as they will be best placed to give the “most accurate and up-to-date information”.

"Contact their airlines", that's a laugh - I online chatted with Ryanair yesterday and the guy didn't even know about the strikes! I had to prompt him twice and when he finally figured it out he told me he had no idea how it would affect our flight. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys...
