Just a little warning about restaurants on Thursday 2nd August, this is the big night, "The Moros y Cristianos". Obviously the restaurants will be very busy but some actually close , i assume because they are taking part, so i would advise you to pre-book a table to avoid disappointment.

In the Port, i know for sure that the Golden Lion and El Posito will not be open.

Despite the tireless struggle of the Moors, Christians returned to win. At seven o'clock in the afternoon yesterday, the town of Pollença broke out in a colorful and noisy battle after the warning cry of Joan Mas, this year played by Jaume Canaves. How could it be otherwise, thousands of people waited forward to the start of the drill in the narrow streets of the town center which commemorates the battle that happened on 31 May 1550, when the Saracen troops, led by the feared corsair Dragut, this year represented by Miquel Vives, tried to invade the town of Pollença. Under the umbrella of the Mare de Deu dels Angels, and after more than two hours of fierce battle between Pollença and Moors, But Joan's side won the victory. The simulation is represented in the town since 1880 after centuries to consider that raid pirate as the day of trouble as it resulted in the deaths of 130 Pollença and 50 Moors. Today, the feast of the patron or the Moors and Christians, as it is popularly known throughout the island and beyond, has become a major event from the eighties of last century increasing numbers of visitors and participants, reaching today with a much higher presence of the Moors to the Christians. For battle, they use sticks Pollença, Forques and some other paddle. The Saracens come to fight with wooden swords until some years ago came from the wood of pine of Sant Antoni, but due to the crisis the City Council stopped making these "weapons" and are now the Moors who commission their own manufacture. Beyond the traditional cry of Mare de Deu dels Angels We assist! / Pollença alçau-you! / Eu pirates that are almost here!, Thousands of people come to see the battle and experience the festival. The mesclat, heat, painting of the Moors, the water is released from the balconies or the kindness of Pollença is the essence of the feast of the patron. After the first battles in the historic center of town sweeping with paperí has decorated the streets of the town during the festivities, the battle moves to the football pitch Can Carrinxó where the final battle takes place and the Christian leader, Joan Mas, gets hold of the flag of the troops Saracen despite the opposition and struggle hard Dragut and his men, always accompanied by the Abanderat, which is the first to enter the football field, and Lloctinent, Chacon and Jaime Vives Amador, respectively. But before the battle during the final walk through the narrow streets of the town to the football field, representatives of the City Council Vella, played by Jordi Reines, Francisco Sanchez, Miguel Sebastia Morro Morro and led the Christian flag and supported at all times to Joan Mas and all other Christians that were discussed in the struggle. After the drill, victorious Christian went to the parish church of Pollença where sang the Te Deum of mossèn Miquel Tortell in honor of his patron, the Mare de Deu dels Angels.

Default Moors and Christians

Great video sparky and it brings back all the memories, love the sound of the band.
So after a break of 5 years or so we were back for the battle, and so glad we were, its a great event and one to catch if you can.
Its starts off in the square with it full of people and when the band come in they go wild, take off their shirts and dance around.

Next the main characters, local dignitaries and finally the La Patrona are lead out of the church.

Next we headed off to the Moors side, this was right at the bottom of the road where they all charge down at the start, it was very hot and stuffy but a good place to see all the action.

Once it starts all hell breaks lose, the moors rush down the road for every direction heading up towards La font.

The band come along and lead the charge

Then they arrive with the guns, they are so load in the narrow streets and the aim is to try and blow down all the bunting, they only use blanks but the sound is deafening

Finally the Christians push the moors back along the roads to wards the edge of town, when they got to us it went wild and I couldn't take any more photos, spent all the time pushing people away so as not to get crushed, we did get a bit close to the action!

This video on youtube shows what it is like, this is where we were and if he had walked a few more meters you would have seen us.

Moros y Cristianos Pollensa 2012 - YouTube

So after they had passed we left them to head off to the sports field to finish of with an other mock battle, but we were 'tired and emotional' by then and headed of, me with my shirt dripping with sweat from everyone passing and the wife covered in paint for the numerous kisses from the retreating moors, a great day and hopefully we can be back again next year.

Wonderful pics Sws! Brings back memories! We were also nearly crushed a few years ago, it can get very raucous but a great event, just be careful where you stand.

Yes Cheryl you just have to be aware of where you can get out of the way if needed, we stood just by an open door so we could have ducked inside if necessary. The place we choose was not a place for small kids there but lots of places where you can stand safely out of the way and still see all the action.
