PUERTO POLLENSA LETS ITS HAIR DOWN

The fiestas in honour of Puerto Pollensa’s patron saint, the Virgin del Carmen, began in great style last Friday evening when crowds swamped the local church to hear opening ceremony speeches and music from the group Cap Pela. Outside in the square and surrounding streets, residents and visitors alike were having fun at the many fairground attractions. Brightly-coloured helium-filled balloons in a variety of shapes were held aloft by the youngest, other children jumped and shrieked happily on the giant bouncy castles . . . one featuring this year’s hot favourite, Harry Potter, and others with sea creature themes, and teenagers tested their skills at the rifle range or just enjoyed the candy floss and “churros” (fried dough sticks).

On Saturday evening the square was again filled with live music that went on into the small hours of Sunday morning. There was something for everyone as promised by the organisers of the fiesta, the Puerto Pollensa Neighbourhood Association. Felipe Segui, the Association President, has indicated that he thinks it is time for him to hand his many responsibilities over to someone else, and if this is so, his will be a hard act to follow since he has worked tirelessly for the people of the port during his six years in office, and been responsible for many improvements in the town and on the beaches as well as arranging some magnificent fiestas.

The celebrations continued on Sunday with a massive cook-out for some 1,500 members of the Neighbourhood Association in the sea-front children’s park. Passing holidaymakers watched in amazement as a “fish rice soup” (which included 150 kilos of mussels!) was cooked in a huge pot. Diners enjoyed a starter of “coca” (the Majorcan version of pizza with spinach or onions and peppers on a pastry base), then the rice main course and a dessert of delicious ensaimada pastries. All washed down with plenty of wine, beer or water and followed by a glass of cava to toast the occasion. Pollensa’s new mayor, Joan Cerda, spoke briefly to wish everyone a happy fiesta, and live music played throughout the afternoon. With more lively music in the town’s main square that evening it was all definitely very festive.

And it hasn’t stopped! This evening tables outside the port’s church hall will be laden with typically Majorcan produce for people to sample. Tomorrow from 5pm the entertainment in the square is dedicated to children, and on Friday evening there is more music from 10.30pm with “Abba” singing, and groups from Hawaii and Kenya presenting typical dances and music from their regions. Saturday night’s offerings (from 10pm) come from Xicarandana and Los Javaloyas, the latter being a six-piece combo including piano, double-bass, drums and saxophone who will be playing music for dancing. The youth of the area, meanwhile, are being catered for out at the football ground by the Playa Mar Hotel where the ground will be shaking under the sound of various local rock and pop groups.

Sunday night marks the last day of the fiestas which, as usual, will end with a bang, well several bangs in fact, since after a procession when effigies of the Virgin and St Peter are carried through the town and out on decorated boats around the bay (around 7 to 7.30pm), and a further musical parade later on in the evening, there will be a grand firework display on the beach from half-past midnight. This is always a fantastic sight and one not to be missed if you are holidaying in the area. Have a happy fiesta, and thanks to all at the Neighbourhood Association for their hard work.
