Default Best Prices?

Heading back to PP in October, can't wait. Just starting to look at car hire and wondered if you get any better deals just turning up at the airport & playing each company off against each other? Some of the prices on the internet vary so wildly for the type of car we're after - an MPV/People carrier, there are differences of over £200 between some companies...

Has anyone done this at all? Or would I get a better deal booking online.

Thanks!

Usually get a better deal online...many of the staff aren't empowered to 'deal' on the spot and with a specialist vehicle you take a risk of not getting availability..
I usually use carjet or holiday autos...

Amazingly Hertz have come up with the best price - I've never had a cheap price from them before (it was through a discount that I receive through work - but even without it, it was still the cheapest by £40)....

Anyone had any bad experiences with them in Majorca - I've used them elsewhere without any problems...

Remember to check if the price quoted includes full insurance and no extra charge for second driver etc when you arrive.

Often extra insurance is not mentioned until you arrive to collect the car.

At the moment Easyjet advertise good prices through europecar.
Only problem is the full insurance excess.
VW touran ( or similar) advertised for £103.19 for 1 week, bargain !
until you book it and find out the 'maxi cover' insurance is another £102.47 + second driver another £40.68 so what looks like £103 is actually £246 ( + fuel)

we always use Autos Roig Car hire Majorca, car hire Cala Dor, direct service at the airport , not cheap but high quality service and no tricks.

Mark.

I know this is gonna sound like I`m trying to teach you seasoned travellers to suck eggs ,BUT.
Please make sure you keep your eyes on your credit cards when hiring cars at the airport.I have heared on a couple of other forums I am a member of some real horror stories about people having their credit card cloned, and getting home to fine their bill for £ thousands.
Also please make sure you take photo`s of the vehicle you are hireing, every panel and window, mirror ect...make sure the person you are hireing it from sees you doing so too.
other wise it could cost you dearly!I will look for the post from one of my friends who had to pay £997 for damage that was already done to the vehicle.
As I said at the begining of this post.not trying to tell you how to travel. We know you are not daft(you are a member of this site..very sensible..lol)Just want everyone to have a great time and not have their holiday spoiled by some unscrupuless people.

Thanks Dave, its always worth pushing a point when its happened to some one you know, as we all tend to think "it wont happen to me", but it clearly can and it keeps it in mind.

Hi, I frequently have holidays in Menorca and Majorca . Regarding car hire I prefer the FULL / FULL fuel system. We hired the last car on a FULL / EMPTY basis in May but we spent most of the week in the hotel as we were both ill meaning we hardly used the car. This resulted in us taking the car back at the end with an almost full tank. I calculated the cost of that fuel at about 55 Euros and we lost that as no refunds are given for fuel not used !
It seems that in Menorca most companies operate a Full / Full policy but in Majorca it's a FULL / EMPTY policy . However , its not all companies but make sure you check the terms and conditions BEFORE you book otherwise it could prove expensive if you end up leaving a load of fuel in the car. I believe Record operate a differnt policy so its worth having a look.
This time ~ October I booked through doyoudospain.com and the car supplier through them was Auriga Crown and they operate a FULL / Empty policy ( not what I usually prefer ) BUT ...... they were cheaper by £40 than all other companies and I searched lots and lots. In fact , booking via doyoudospain.com was £30 cheaper than going direct to Auriga Crown . So , overall , I would say check the cost , check the fuel policy , check the insurance type and against all that think about how much fuel you might use ( or not use ) . if your staying near Palma then you might not use much fuel and end up taking the car back half full. if your staying in Perto Pollensa then its likely the distance going there and back will use up the fuel anyway.
My point here is , what looks the cheapest isn't always the cheapest and we all know that anyway .
It just grinds very very thin with me when I take a car back with Expensive fuel in it, that Iv'e paid for , just to allow the car hire company to take it and not pay me for it. I wonder how much they gain in a year by having that policy ...... thousands I bet.

Having said all that .... I am a old , bald , fat , grumpy old man !

Have a nice holiday

I booked doyouspain and it was Record who are full /full which is what i like they will always quote you for record if you ask normal same price. I got a revised quote two days before going to PP and it was 10€ cheeper so rang them and they changed booking no question would use again only problem was long que for car at 10:30pm on Friday night.

Just thought I'd update you on my experience of Hertz...

They tried the old "we don't have that model available" routine when we pitched up. The manager of the office was completely unhelpful and was only interested in charging us for the next model up...

Fortunately the lady I was dealing with was a great deal more receptive and off her own back offered us the next vehicle up (Renault Espace) at no extra cost to us.

I think that if we weren't as vocal as we were - there were a number of people queueing behind us - we probably wouldn't have been given the service we'd booked for. I suppose the answer is to make a firm stand and don't give way!

Hertz charge quite a lot extra for additional drivers in my experience compared to the others.
