Default Motorway speed controls by helicopter

We noticed when returning to Palma Airport on Saturday, that the overhead gantry signs warned against speeding.
We were then surprised to see that the signs showed that Police cars and helicopters would be checking the speed of vehicles. We laughed briefly until we then spotted two helicopters following each other at a distance actually following the line of the motorway, presumably doing just that.
