Default Beach Closure - Sewage Alert

From Today's Mallorca Daily Bulletin:-

Part of Pollensa beach closed because of sewage pollution
Staff Reporter

THE Pollensa Local Police force has closed off a 100 metre stretch of the Albercuix beach, after sewage pollution was detected in the sea.

The stretch which has been closed off is between the Restaurante Mestral and the hotel Sis Pins.

Council sources said yesterday that the analyses of the water made on a regular basis by the health authorities had shown a reduction of the quality of the sea water in the area over the past few days.

They attributed it to a spillage from cesspits still used by old buildings in the area or to the age of the sewage pipes.
Mayor Joan Cerda said that the beach would remain closed until the source of the filtrations was determined.

In order to trace the source, he added, a camera on a robot would be used.

The filtrations did not cause any changes in the sea water, and many tourists and summer residents were surprised to see the beach closed off.

Albercuix beach is next to the Paseo Anglada Camarassa, the main street in the resort.

Various bar and restaurant owners who have terraces next to the beach complained about the visibility of the ribbon blocking access.

The Mayor, however, said that priority was given to “protecting the health of tourists.” He added that people could swimm safely at the rest of the beach, but not on the stretch which has been fenced off. “We do not want to create social alarm, but we are aware that we are in the high season, however, it is health which is the most important,” Cerda said.

A stretch of beach had to be closed last summer, also because of filtrations.

Earlier this month, the Cala Gran beach in Cala d'Or was closed for two days after a sewage spill was detected.

Does anyone know if the Albacruix is still closed? I find it very difficult to get information regarding the quality of the seawater - even the Tourist Office does not reply to my request for information.

Just back and saw no closures.

The part of beach mentioned in the Bulletin was open again however we did see the camera being put down the manhole outside the Sis Pins on Wednesday ("keek Cam")

Default Beach closure

Not long back, the first week the beach in front of the Mestral was closed. To be honest you could have stood in front of it and spread your arms and that was about the size of it. i personally would'nt want to swim in that stretch, certainly would't like to swallow any of the water. On the plus side a little further on, the Tamarals beach had been awarded the blue flag, lovely big beach with plenty of beds/space and water-sports

Re Tamarells, look at the map Grid Ref F12 www.puertopollensa.com/maps/southern.html There is a green area marked which is a play area but now also has public toilets. The wide beach opposite (South Sandy beach) stretches along in the direction of Alcudia. Further along on the beach is the Tamarells beach bar.

Am assuming that beach is 'Tamarells'? Blue Flag beaches in the Balearics can be seen here: www.blueflag.org/blueflag/2007/Spain/Baleares?sort=municipality&order=asc
