Old Town Recommendations
Following our recent trip I'd like to thoroughly recommend a couple of restaurants in the old town. A couple of years ago (possibly more) we had a couple of rather disappointing meals at La Fonda - however, after the new owners took over, I can report that it is now back to its best serving traditional Mallorcan food. We had an excellent tumbet and the best Mallorcan style sea bass that I have had in Mallorca (and I always order it wherever it is on the menu!) It was amazingly fresh and delicious. The children shared some tapas - also very good - and the almond cake with ice cream was a great way to end the meal. This restaurant is in such a beautiful old building - I'm surprised it doesn't get more mentions.
And the MDD at Trencadora is just incredibly good value. We visited twice: the first time I started with beef carpaccio and artichokes, then had cod served with red peppers, with a pastry to finish; the second time I had a primavera salad (I wondered what this was: turns out it consists largely of fruit, including melon, limes, orange, strawberries - sounds like it might not be great as a savoury starter but it was fantastic - I'd eat it every day if I could!). The main course was meatballs and the pudding was a gorgeous fig tart. My husband isn't a pudding man but even he enjoyed this. There were a number of other choices for each course - I think it was 10E in total - which is incredible, given the beautiful location and the quality of the food. It's a big favourite of ours and the staff are lovely too. While we were there they hosted a fantastic Sunday brunch in aid of a cancer charity - it was a great way to spend an afternoon.
Now I just have to come to terms with the fact that we won't be back until October...
