Default TheFussies 2012 trip Report

Just back after a very enjoyable trip to the port. This year as well as Mr & Mrs Fussie we had Miss Fussie for the first 9 days, the FussieSister and FussiePartner for a week and for our last week we were joined by the FussieFriends.

Part 1 The Return of MissFussie!
23rd June After a long day’s travel, unpacking and a supermarket sweep it was decided that some early refreshment was called for. Stay was the chosen venue for some tapas. Selection of peppers de pardon, ham and chicken croquettes, and garlic mushrooms washed down by a couple of glasses of cava for Miss & Mrs Fussie and a beer for me. A lovely later afternoon snack with a fabulous view had placed the Fussies in full holiday mode. I don’t recall the price of the beer and cava but at 4 euros a plate the tapas was good value for money.
It’s normally a convention with TheFussies not to visit an establishment we really like on our first night as it often leads to disappointment. Sometimes it is just better to go for comfort food rather than fine dining. Regular readers of the Fussie reports may recall we reported very favourably on Bellavista last year. However the Fussie first night curse confirmed we should have gone elsewhere. The food as individual dishes was certainly acceptable as was the wine (a sauvignon blanc at 12 euros), the menu though was substantially reduced and favourites from last year no longer available. Miss Fussie in particular was disappointed with her spring rolls and MrsFussie struggled with a lentil tomato and onion salad. A starter of a mezze platter was good as was the pumpkin ravioli. In our opinion Bellavista would have been a better option as a lunch menu. We still like the setting and the general laid back vibe. I’m sure we will revisit in the future.

24th June O Lume was to be our choice as firstly Jaime doesn’t have a TV (football was on) and really didn’t want watching telly to intrude on our meal. Only problem is O Lume may not have had a TV but Tots did and the volume was deafening at times. A change from last year is that O Lume offer an excellent 20 euro menu del dia (selected by MrsFussie) with Miss Fussie electing for Peppers de padron followed by arrabiata. I chose calamaritos fritos (absolutely fantastic and in a portion size suitable for 4 to share!) followed by shoulder of lamb. Yummy! Menu del dia choice consisted of ginger spiced prawns followed by grilled sea bream and orange Cointreau crepes. To keep MrsFussie company we ordered a crème brulee and chocolate mouse. All this was washed down with a bottle of albarinio and a half bottle of Otonal. Finally we had coffee accompanied by liquers and chocolates on the house. Considering the quality of the food at 94 euros we were well pleased. Standards of cooking have been maintained by the new chef and Jaime is as hospitable as ever. Well worth a visit.

25th June Time for trip to Pollensa and our favourite from last year Trecadora. This has a really nice garden setting and considering it was a Monday evening absolutely packed. We could only get a table inside. Starters consisted of for MissFussie bruschetta and to share tabaluga salad for Mr&MrsFussie with mains of garlic spaghetti , spaghetti with clams and focaccia primavera. A bottle of albarinio. With the usual bread with nice olives and pickles total cost 64 euros.

26th June Always a warm welcome at Citrus with Kenny very adept at catering for MissFussies eating whims! We started with a salad to share and tempura chicken followed by a chicken stirfry with noodles and two grilled seabass. A large beer and two large glasses of wine brought the total to 63 euros. The seabass was very well cooked with crispy skin, very good. Even MissFussie has now branched out into seafood!

Default Part 2 FussieSister & FussiePartner Arrive

Part 2 FussieSister & FussiePartner Arrive

27th June Following on from our successful opening visit to Stay I decided to take FussieSister&FussiePartner along with all the other Fussies to Stay to take in the early evening sun, the view, enjoy some tapas and partake of a drink or two. Much the same tapas combo just more of it! Another great start to the holidays.
In the evening Spain were playing Italy, decided to give as all bars and most restaurants had by now TV’s and FussiePartner was interested in game. Cellar la Parrer was chosen venue. WE started with tumbet and trampo to share between 5. Followed by special mixed paella a vegetable paella and chicken in pepper sauce. Strangely the staff did not want to sell me the expensive red but rather vino de casa with the offer if we didn’t like it then they would pay. At 5.50 euros it was brilliant so I ended up paying. A bottle of Murviedro sauvignon at 9 euros was also a good by. At a total of 76 euros for 5 people this was exceptional value.
June 28th Ruta Del Tapeo. Must admit we were slightly unsure of this, would we get enough to eat? So a compromise was struck, we would aim for 4 then go to O Lume for a steak! Started off in Citrus where Kenny had prepared a number of options including a special risotto ball concoction for MissFussie. After downing beers and wines it was off to La Cabana for more beers, wines and one of the best presented prawns I’ve ever seen. Although vegetarian option was not on offer a suitable vegetarian spiced chickpea dish was then supplied for MissFussie. It all tasted as good as it looked. Next was Can Balache, MissFussie did not fancy veggie option so four of us to eat the 5 dishes a tomato and pork sausage dish. By now getting worried at the time and the quantity of wine being consumed. At 1.50 euro the wine seemed worth that alone. Next on our list was Bar Rumbo but decided we better go for a steak instead. TheFussies were photographed in Citrus and image placed on the Ruta del Tapeo facebookpage. So if you want to be able to identify the infamous MissFussie go have a look!

O Lume. Ok this only to be one course but ended up a major meal.
Langoustines and monkfish kebabs for MissFussie, calamaritos fritos for MrsFussie a salad for FussieSister and steaks for myself and FussiePartner washed down with an albarinio and Anaraes reserve. Jaime brought out the special glasses for the reserve. He counted them back in again!! Crepes with Grand Marnier and 5 spoons followed by coffee, liquers & chocolates finished the evening. 115 euros with 30 of that for the wines.
June 29th It’s Mr&MrsFussies anniversary therefore a special restaurant has to be selected, a candle lit dinner for two. Llonja was ultimate choice. Shared a salad, with monkfish casserole for Mrs and fillets of 3 white fish for me. A Vionta Albarinio complemented the meal and after coffees and liqueurs I was 86 euros lighter in my wallet. Must say we both thoroughly enjoyed the meal. We had not been to Llonja for a couple of years but it did not disappoint.

June 30th MissFussies penultimate night a family outing to Stay as dad’s treat was prescribed (by MrsFussie) Four menu del dia’s plus salad and seabass for MissFussie a waterside table, a beautiful evening. Cannot recall all that we had but the duck was memorable. Other mains salmon with sweet mustard sauce. FussieSister did not enthuse over her gazpacho starter but other than that all other dishes were considered very good.

Dad’s treat 171 euros.

Next MissFussie is replaced by the FussieFriends

Once again a fantatic, detailed review which has taken a lot of effort and will no doubt help others decide. Sorry i couldn't make it over this June or, no doubt, our paths would have crossed, Jaime(O'Lume) must have looked a lot more serene as he didn't have me to deal with for a month

Default Part 3 Spain Win - MissFussie Goes Home

Part 3 Spain Win – MissFussie Goes Home
1st July Yes its European Championship Finals night will Spain win? Where to go with the newly arrived FussieFriends to celebrate MissFussies return home on the 2nd? With the weather looking like thunder the choice becomes Cella La Parra. A nice round table is booked for 7 people, indoors near the screen for those interested in the match. The restaurant is packed inside with a mix of holidaymakers and locals. The food quickly ordered. Starters of Tumbet, salad, vegetable soup pa anb oli, ham croquets, gazpacho and mains consisting of entrecote steak, mixed paella, chicken breast in pepper sauce, dorado washed down with copious amonts of the vino de casa tinto and murviedro sauvignon blanc. By the time we were finished Itay were finished. Cost 138 euros.
The town then erupted as the celebrated MissFussies departure. Or was it Spains victory. Great night.
2nd July For a complete change Mr & MrsFussie and FussieFriends visited El Bistro a new venue for us and one that’s received favourable comment on this forum. We were not disappointed.. Shared a Tirolo salad and croquettes, followed by cod with sobrasada and honey (2 off for the Fussies) and spaghetti Bolognese and mushroom risotto for FussieFriends. A jug of sangria and a few large beers brought total bill 88 euros. The cod was delicious and highly recommended. The staff were attentive and efficient and we got a view across the bay as well. Another great night.

FussieSister & FussiePartner decided on a romantic meal together in O Lume. Other than steaks not sure what else they ordered.

3rd July
After last night in El Bistro Mr&MrsFussie decided to try a light lunch of Spanish omelette. Can recommend El Bistro lunch and dinner and coffees of the beach tried as well. El Bistro are going to score well this year.
Last night for the FussieSister so a meal for four at Stay on the set menu.
Selections of rigatoni arrabbiata, smoked fish fillets made up the starters followed by 3 spring chickens and grilled lamb steak for mains. Again a waterside table booked to complete the evening. 138 euros.
We are now in the home straight! Only TheFussies and FussieFriends left!

Default Part 4 The Home Straight

Part 4 The Home Straight
4th July
Went to the Forum Meeting on the 3rd and apart from meeting with members (see Sparky’s report) received a recommendation from Clinkham regarding the new owners of La Fortalesa. Convinced the FussieFriends we should try it out. What a find. It’s run by a chef, his mother girlfriend and a friend. What the girls lack in front of house training they more than make up with friendliness and enthusiasm. The chefs pretty good too!
We were greeted with a well glass of bubbly, plates of tomato bread placed on the table. When we ordered a bottle of albarinio the special glasses were brought out. We ordered avocado salad, gazpacho, garlic prawns, and chicken croquettes to start. The portions were huge! The croquettes 4 off could have sufficed for all four as a starter. We then had to deal with lemon sole, dorado, John Dory and 'meat cake' a shepherds pie type dish. The fish fillets were again huge and at least two per plate! By the end we thought we were stuffed until FussieFriend ordered a cheesecake and 4 spoons. Not the normal biscuit base more the baked variety. No matter we found room for it!
On receipt of bill 107 euros we were given complimentary liqueurs. Finished the evening discussing with chef and staff the old pictures of Puerto Pollensa hanging on walls and confirming the exact location of the old Bull Ring. A fantastic night with excellent food. Try this place out.
As a footnote for Clinkham there were 26 diners that evening whilst we were in. And to all readers if you are in town go to a Forum Meeting.
5th July Ruta Del Tapeo night. This week no way we were going to go for a meal, this to be a serious tapas crawl. Eventually ended up in 8 establishments : La Cabana, Bar Rumbo, Can Torrens, Geminis, Café d’eu Moll, Juniors, Can Tofol and finally 49 Ivy Garden (almost on stroke of midnight). Unfortunately La Cantina2 was closed when we arrived as based on the Sunday event we were all looking forward to it. Met Mr & Mrs Lizard at Bar Rumo and they joined us for the rest of the evening. The larger the party the better with the Ruta. Met a few other groups doing the rounds all having a great time. By the time we reach Juniours and Can Tofol there were three large groups present. Both bars were packed and the food delicious. I’m much taken by the quality and the quantity of wine. Few of the dishes were found to be disagreeable. Lowest score was cuttlefish were only 50% liked it (Can Torrens). Having said that the dishes vary weekly. At 12 euros a head to have food and 8 substantial glasses of wine in good company over 4 hours this has to be the bargain of the holiday. MrFussie did not rise from bed until after 10am the following morning.

6th July Back to Pollensa with FussieFriends to Trencadora. Pushed the boat out ordering a Mortitx to go with tabaluga salad, bruschetta followed by 2 spaghetti with clams, lasagne and a Hawaian pizza. 78 euros and four happy diners returned to the port.

7th July Last full day for TheFussies. Started with lunch in El Bistro By now we are regulars getting greetings from all staff. Two more Spanish omelettes a jug of sangria and a beer. The bread and ali olli are superb. 27 euros
Final meal was going to be La Cabana as were impressed by all the tapas dishes served there. Forgot about the small print – closed Saturdays. So second choice came down to Los Faroles. A bit nervous about choice as last year we had one excellent meal and one indifferent meal. This year’s proved to be truly fantastic.
Mr & MrsFussie and FussieFriends tucked into 3 vegetable soups and peppers de padron to start, followed by a monkfish casserole (with langoustines and clams), lemon sole, turbot and chicken in pepper sauce. Complemented by a Vionta Albarinio. At a cost of 92 euros this was a memorable meal. Los Faroles is a fish restuarant and the fish is most definitely fresh being wheeled around for diners to select. So if you are a fish lover, go if not go with a fish lover!

That concludes TheFussies eating experiences of 2012. I hope we have given you some inspiration and possible venues for your own holidays.

Dear Mrs Fussies thank you for taking the time to write what can only be described as a clear ,concise report on your comestible intake whilst on vacation.
as a result The Cumberland's will grace several of your recommendations & produce nutritional reports on each establishment.
