Part 4 The Home Straight
4th July
Went to the Forum Meeting on the 3rd and apart from meeting with members (see Sparky’s report) received a recommendation from Clinkham regarding the new owners of La Fortalesa. Convinced the FussieFriends we should try it out. What a find. It’s run by a chef, his mother girlfriend and a friend. What the girls lack in front of house training they more than make up with friendliness and enthusiasm. The chefs pretty good too!
We were greeted with a well glass of bubbly, plates of tomato bread placed on the table. When we ordered a bottle of albarinio the special glasses were brought out. We ordered avocado salad, gazpacho, garlic prawns, and chicken croquettes to start. The portions were huge! The croquettes 4 off could have sufficed for all four as a starter. We then had to deal with lemon sole, dorado, John Dory and 'meat cake' a shepherds pie type dish. The fish fillets were again huge and at least two per plate! By the end we thought we were stuffed until FussieFriend ordered a cheesecake and 4 spoons. Not the normal biscuit base more the baked variety. No matter we found room for it!
On receipt of bill 107 euros we were given complimentary liqueurs. Finished the evening discussing with chef and staff the old pictures of Puerto Pollensa hanging on walls and confirming the exact location of the old Bull Ring. A fantastic night with excellent food. Try this place out.
As a footnote for Clinkham there were 26 diners that evening whilst we were in. And to all readers if you are in town go to a Forum Meeting.
5th July Ruta Del Tapeo night. This week no way we were going to go for a meal, this to be a serious tapas crawl. Eventually ended up in 8 establishments : La Cabana, Bar
Rumbo, Can Torrens, Geminis, Café d’eu Moll, Juniors,
Can Tofol and finally 49 Ivy Garden (almost on stroke of midnight). Unfortunately La Cantina2 was closed when we arrived as based on the Sunday event we were all looking forward to it. Met Mr & Mrs Lizard at Bar Rumo and they joined us for the rest of the evening. The larger the party the better with the Ruta. Met a few other groups doing the rounds all having a great time. By the time we reach Juniours and Can Tofol there were three large groups present. Both bars were packed and the food delicious. I’m much taken by the quality and the quantity of wine. Few of the dishes were found to be disagreeable. Lowest score was cuttlefish were only 50% liked it (Can Torrens). Having said that the dishes vary weekly. At 12 euros a head to have food and 8 substantial glasses of wine in good company over 4 hours this has to be the bargain of the holiday. MrFussie did not rise from bed until after 10am the following morning.
6th July Back to Pollensa with FussieFriends to Trencadora. Pushed the boat out ordering a Mortitx to go with tabaluga salad, bruschetta followed by 2 spaghetti with clams, lasagne and a Hawaian pizza. 78 euros and four happy diners returned to the port.
7th July Last full day for TheFussies. Started with lunch in El Bistro By now we are regulars getting greetings from all staff. Two more Spanish omelettes a jug of sangria and a beer. The bread and ali olli are superb. 27 euros
Final meal was going to be La Cabana as were impressed by all the tapas dishes served there. Forgot about the small print – closed Saturdays. So second choice came down to Los Faroles. A bit nervous about choice as last year we had one excellent meal and one indifferent meal. This year’s proved to be truly fantastic.
Mr & MrsFussie and FussieFriends tucked into 3 vegetable soups and peppers de padron to start, followed by a monkfish casserole (with langoustines and clams), lemon sole, turbot and chicken in pepper sauce. Complemented by a Vionta Albarinio. At a cost of 92 euros this was a memorable meal. Los Faroles is a fish restuarant and the fish is most definitely fresh being wheeled around for diners to select. So if you are a fish lover, go if not go with a fish lover!
That concludes TheFussies eating experiences of 2012. I hope we have given you some inspiration and possible venues for your own holidays.
