Default A sad evening out.An apocryphal story(part 1 to 4)

This tale is dedicated to those people who insist on certain criteria when dining out in Puerto Pollensa.
One day my friend Bill suggested to me that we organise an evening out with all the contributers to this forum."But there are over three thousand of them "I exclaimed."True" he said,"but remember that a lot of them will be back in the UK or other countries and some won't come anyway so there shouldn't be a problem" "OK" I said and the invitations were sent out.
The arrangement was that we would meet in the square prior to going to the restaurant."There are too many" I said, but Bill was busy counting."Sixty four people" he said."That'll be OK"he said trying to reassure me.
Off we went to the restaurant and on entering I started to hear loud complaints coming from many of our party."What's up" I asked."We can't eat here" came the reply."Why not" said I."We don't know any of the staff" came the reply."We only go to restaurants where both the proprietor and the staff are known to us and we can converse on first name terms" With that, half of our invitees left in shocked disgust.

Default A sad evening out.An apocryphal story(part 2)

(Please read Part 1 first)

Still the complaints were coming from our guests."I'll find out what's occurring" said Bill.In a few minutes he was by my side."Well" I said."Never mind first name terms"he replied."Half of those left won't stop here because they don't even recognise the staff and vice versa and that includes the cat in the kitchen" "Let them go" I said."We still have a good number staying". So they left grumbling about finding another restaurant at that time of night where they would be recognised.
The sixteen of us sat down, perused the wine list, and ordered.Once everyone was served with wine there were more rumblings."What now" I demanded."The wine waiter didn't show us the lable on the bottle before he poured it. "We are not stopping here" they said and once again our party was cut in half as another eight left in abject horror.

Default A sad evening out.An apocryphal story(Part 3)

(Please read parts 1 and 2 first)

"Everything OK now"? asked Bill."Not really" came the reply from half of the remaining guests."when the wine waiter poured our drinks we could see both of his hands and that's not done in the restaurants we normally go to,he should have had his non-pouring hand behind his back" "Just go" I said,"this is getting ridiculous"
We were down to four.Great, I thought, now I will be able to talk to everyone.
The first course came and went without any complaint. At last,I thought, surely everything will be fine now.The main course arrived and immediately the two people opposite Bill and I stood up and started to go."Not you too" I said."Why are you going"?"Because of the breadcrumbs on the table. They should have been removed before the main course arrived.Very bad so we are leaving"
" Just you and me Bill" I sighed."Yes" he said."Hope you enjoy your meal"
The main course was eaten followed by the pudding and I thought that all was well.Suddenly Bill stood up and, in irate terms, told me that he was going home as he was as dry as a bone. "But there is still a lot of wine left in your bottle" I said."I know" came the reply "but I finished my first glass ages ago and the wine waiter hasn't come back to our table.I'm not used to having to top up my own glass, thats the job of the wine waiter" With that he stormed out.

Default A sad evening out.An apocryphal story(Part 4)

(Please read the first three parts first)

I was alone and feeling sad as the waiter came to my table."Any coffee sir" he asked."Yes please" I replied."What kind of coffee would you like"? "I suppose it will have to be cafe solo" I said, laughing inwardly at my own little joke.
Coffee finished,I paid the bill and trudged home with my tongue firmly wedged in my cheek.

PS. I don't have a friend called Bill.He was just made up for the purpose of this story.

PPS. Actually I don't really have many friends at all.
