Smile Stay

Hello to all,
We have so often discussed a visit to Stay and Gommar Goffers review has once again reminded us that we have never eaten there. I had a look at the menu on their website and it is indeed a great menu, and it looks VERY nice.

We are bringing friends this visit and thought they would enjoy the location and food, but has anyone taken their children recently. Just wondering if they have a kiddies menu , or if they are accommodating and would serve a smaller portion from the a la carte menu . I don`t mind paying for an adult portion but I doubt if our son could eat it all.

Any information gratefully received.
Regards TT

Hi TT!
You will have a wonderful meal I'm sure. It's our favourite restaurant in the Port ... the MDD is very good value for the quality of the food, and the service you will receive is attentive but never intrusive. Don't worry about your son, they do a selection of childrens meals. When we were there last July for the fireworks they had on offer hamburgers, spag bol, lasagne ,or fish and chips. The two 12 year olds with us had the burger (homemade not processed) and chips and came with salad ..good value at 8 €. I'm also sure that they would prepare a smaller portion from the a la carte menu.

Not sure when you're going but if it's warm book a table by the waters edge.. BLISS

Debs

Another tip - if you're going in the busy season, try & avoid Friday night as it's their busiest night - the last night of the holiday for many people - so the staff may be rather rushed. But do try & sit outside by the water. (do book!) If it's cool they have heaters & if the weather turns they'll move you indoors. Enjoy it!

It's just sublime, quite the best restaurant in the Port. Not the cheapest, but one of the very few places where you don't seem to mind what the cost is. A similar establishment in the UK would set you back at least twice as much, and without the ambience and view.

Personally I've never had a bad experience at Stay and always make sure I get a good fix of it when I am in town. But like any of these places it doesn't suit everyone. There are a number of people who post on here and don't like it. The major complaint seems to be that the atmosphere can, at times, be a bit like being in a noisy cafe. Judging these places is a very personal issue - and it's a free world and all that...

We've just returned from 2 great weeks in PP and had some excellent meals. The only meal I didn't really enjoy was at Stay. We booked a table for 6 adults and 1 baby outside. My first impression was that the tables were a bit close together. We ordered a round of drinks, then some wine and water. The water turned up soon afterwards but no sign of the wine. It finally arrived after we had reminded the waiter 4 times and we had finished our starters. Then the overhead heaters came on! It was like trying to eat a meal whilst sitting under a home solarium. Our heater was directly above our 15 month old son's head and you could see him turning progressively red until my wife politely asked if they could switch our heater off. The waitress kindly obliged and for 5 minutes or so we were able to enjoy the warm mediterranean evening without the searing artificial heat. Then a northern lady sitting behind us demanded that the waitress turn the heater back on and so we were blasted again.I could understand if it was a cold or slightly chilly evening but it must have been 72 degrees with hardly a breeze. I watched my main course be taken to 4 or 5 different tables before they struck lucky and found me. The service was erratic and chaotic and not the friendliest. We skipped desserts and got the bill which was the largest of the whole fortnight. It seems Stay is trying to be something it isn't.

Monty,

Think you must have been really unlucky cos the service cannot be beaten here usually in the Port. Very, very professional in my opinion. Similar story to yours but with a happier ending, we were there ( six of us) last week sitting on the deck when the wind got up during our meal. Effortlessly we just stood up, clutching our wine glasses, and the whole table was just moved inside which we resat at in about two minutes flat. No fuss, no trouble just professional attention to detail. The only time the service, has suffered ,over the years was when they re-opened after the refurbishment and they took a few nights to settle down. To their credit, Jose Maria, the manager understood perfectly and assured them they would get it right. To their credit, I think they did and maintained it since.

Don't give up on them, think you were just unlucky. Could also regale you with tales of them coping with the most awkward of diners ( ain't implying you are ) but I'll save them for another day.

Monty

I agree with BL, I think you were very unlucky. In my estimation Stay is the best restaurant in the Port. It is the highlight of our holidays to dine there and have never been disappointed in over 10 visits.

Adios

Dave

I have to say, in Monty's defence, we were there two years ago and experienced chaotic service. Our wine was also forgotten and we were offered a bottle of white that had been rejected from another table!

At the time it reminded me of a busy works canteen - just my opinion, but certainly different to what I expected and disappointingly inferior to the amazing lunch we had there the year before, which had been sublime.

We have had many lovely memorable lunch times there, but we still feel a little rushed and headachy after an evening meal, keep hoping for a quiet night with just small tables, but there are often large groups which obviously enjoy the night! Nothing wrong with the food though!

Try & go mid-week & avoid Friday (last night) & you may find it is less busy. Definitely less busy in the winter!

Why is it relevant that the lady was Northern Monty? Are we less refined? Do we feel the cold more?

Have to agree with Jane - we had a bad experience and mainly down to the dreadful service; hectic AND slow, disorganised, surly, - my first visit too - but you all rate it so maybe it was just an off night and I may return and stick to the MDD / go midweek.

I just wanted to make it clear that it wasn't a local that insisted the heater was switched back on. A few of my Mallorquin friends have told me that what we may consider to be a warm evening is quite chilly to them and they wouldn't dream of sitting outside, so I could probably understand more if a Spanish person had asked, that's all. I wasn't being regionalist or anything like that. I've been going to Stay for the last 10 years and always enjoyed it, but the last 2 occasions have left me a little disappointed. Every other restaurant we visited over the last 2 weeks seemed to really appreciate our custom and had a friendly, personal, relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately, Stay had none of this.
