Default Cafe at Formentor

CD

However, all of this aside, I can also say that only once in the past 20 years have I felt ripped off and that was very recently at the Cafe on Formentor Beach ( nearly 5 euros for a cup of coffee )
To clarify, which cafe on Formentor beach are you referring to? I have always found the one where the ferries embark to be very good value for money, although never had a coffee there.

No it was the one that is owned by the hotel further along the beach to be clear it is the one right on the beach and not the one set back in the trees which we have used before and though a bit more pricy than the onenear the ferries it was still within a reasonable price range but was closed
we just assumed the one on the beach would be similar in price it was a great setting and we fully expected to pay about 3euros for a coffee but not nearly 5
Lesson learned we won't have a coffee there again

CD - sounds like you had your coffee in what is essentially the summer dining room of the hotel so I am not surprised at the price. The other 2 bars - the one in the pine trees and the one in the jetty are also owned and run by the hotel, so hotel pricing is still to some extent reflected there too.

I think the restaurant in the pine trees is much nicer than the one nearer the hotel...I could sit for hours just gazing out to sea. For that reason I don't mind paying a bit more as the setting is so idyllic. Being owned by the hotel will be reflected in the price but it's not extortionate. Also you get the 5 euros back from the car park fee if you spend over 15 euros

The one further up has only been open to the general public a couple of years and is mainly used by hotel guests. I guess in these hard times they need as many paying customers as possible but IMO it's a rip off and we never use the place.

Agree Debz re the one in the trees , sadly it was closed first week in November. We have never used the one on the beach near the hotel until this year and won;t use it again ........ own fault really for not checking the price ........ funny thng was, as we sat down I said to our friends , this coffee will be expensive ( thinking 3 or maybe 3.5 euros ) but I bet it will be nice and the settign is lovelly.

Actually the coffee wasn't that good ( the one we'd had in the cultural earlier that morning for 1.30 was much nicer ), there were loads of flies around and well I don't need to go on about the cost again.

Good news was that it was a lovelly day and we gotto swim in the sea in November on that lovelly beach with hardly anyone else in sight ......... always a bonus

Oh and no one manning the car park so didn't need to pay to park

Don't think you will be able to park next to the jetty anymore GG . In the summer they had a terrible storm and half the beach was washed away and pine trees near the water uprooted. ( I took some photos on my mobile, I'll see if I can post them) The area where you could park has been landscaped and more trees planted and sand put down.... I think it is being turned into an extension of the beach for people to picnic on.

Sounds like your coffee was from the cafe of the Formentor Hotel where the likes of Greta garbo Agatha Christie Princess Margaret John wayne Charlie Chaplin Ava Gardner Prince Rainier Grace Kelly the Kennedys et al have stayed so the prices are high. If someone in bow tie posh jacket etc approahes to serve coffee etc it tends to have a laxative effect on me!

Funnily enough I read Agatha Christie's short story 'Problem at Pollensa Bay' (written in the 1930s) whilst staying there and it states that tourists gravitated towards Pollensa in the first place because they could not afford the extortionate prices at the Hotel Formentor! Sounds like nothing's changed...
