Default Bar Prices

Ok - lots of talk about prices this year but wonder if it is just the weak pound that we are noticing? I have some receipts for drinks (not that I was thinking about the cost when I was there, just that we had a kitty system going with friends and I was the banker) and I thought some folk may find it interesting to compare (all in euros)

Place.......... Large Beer...... Liqueur..... G & T etc..... Coke

Bony's......... 4.60................... 5.60....................... 2.70
Daina.......... 4.10................... 5.60..... 7.00........... 2.90
Miramar....... 3.00................... 4.10..... 5.25........... 2.00
Joker.......... 3.50.............................................. .. 2.10
Sis Pins....... 3.10.............................................. .. 2.10

Can remember how much it was for a G & T at Bony's - seem to think 8.10 but don't have a receipt. The measures are lethal so maybe still good value.

Oh and cocktails at the Bar Orange were €7.90 which is quite expensive at around £6 a drink - especially as it ws the same prices for the non-alcoholic one.

Hope helpful!

Lala

Just came back last night from a fortnight in port pollenca. We noticed at big increase in prices.

We were staying in the miramar apartments but never had a drink there. I am surprised to see that it is one of the cheaper ones. We went to bonys a few times and the drinks are more expensive compared to cafe l'algar but the measure are massive.

Default Bar Cultural

We went to Bar Cultural in the square a few times last year, quite popular with the locals - has anyone any ideas what the prices are like there this year - cannot remember but am sure it was fairly cheap?

Som e comment on bar prices - and competition / regulation, etc. - in the alcudiapollensa blog.

"I'll give you an example. In Puerto Pollensa, a pint of Mahou costs almost two euros more at a bar in the church square than for the same pint at a bar close to the square. The bar in the square is basically a bar only. It offers snacks but not whole meals, which the second bar does. Turnovers and profits are therefore arrived at by a different mix of sales. Moreover, the bar in the square has location. The punter may prefer the ambience of the square to a bar away from it. And he pays for this as well he may also pay for a higher rent. One price for the Mahou may suit one bar but not the other, besides which the bars have to be allowed the flexibility to differentiate themselves, and price is one of those means of differentiation."

Just back from the Port and yes quite a variation in prices but to be fair there always has been. Maybe now with the unfavourable exchange rate its more noticeable. The closer to the square or the front the more expensive it is. For the past couple of years we have been taking our business to the Cafe D'Eu Moll just behind the church can't quote all the prices but a combinado was either 5 or 5.50 a liquer 3 or 3.50 if that helps. Most importantly though by moving from the square you can at least feel as if you're in a foriegn country i.e mainly spanish customers.

Default Bar Prices

Got to agree, some good bars just behind the church and along that road, some charging as little as 2 Euros a pint, i'm afraid i can't understand peoples fasination with Bony's, i passed the other night and they were packed in like battery chickens, they even had 4 ft high boards saying "this table is available" sorry , once that starts it smacks of commercialism.

I was lucky enough to spend the last 5 weeks in PP, my advice is avoid the square, it's nothing but a over-crowded rip- off. there's far more fun to be had within yards, in any direction.

I have to agree in part with Smiddy, in May we were amazed when charged 8euros for 2 wines in Bony's, in all our other haunts the same measures were between 4 and 6 euros, and the most i paid for a Vodka/tonic (v large measure) was 4 euros.

I too have to agree with much of what Smiddy says - we have been visiting for about 10 years and have never yet eaten in the Square although we have had drinks at Bar Cultural. We prefer to find more authentic places if we can and you don't have to walk far from the Square to do so. This year we came across a bar I think on the street leading from the back left of the Square up towards the sports centre - there was a lovely lady behind the bar who gave us a little dish of olives and nuts with our drinks. Hubby spotted a jamon covered with a cloth and asked if we could have a small portion - we got a taster for two and we weren't charged for it. All the other customers were Spanish (men) and the bar was obviously a locals place - no concessions to tourism at all but then you pay your money and you take your choice as they say. We certainly prefer it.

Easylife

Are you referring to El Pozo, which is just opposite the Small Euroski in Joun XIII Street?

If not, that is a excellent local bar.

Hi guys!

Have to agree with Smiddy especially re Bonys. The attraction there later in the evening is the "cabaret" but not everyone wants that or wants to pay for it either.

I know the bar easylife means and passed by it this year and was interested to see Brits using it. Up towards the old la Vall, now a new Cantonese. Similar places further along too near the big car park.

El Pozo is the one opposite Eroski, which I,ve used for years for a coffee, a beer or a snack and of course internet, for which it is not at all expensive.

Sounds to me as though the bar Easylife is talking about is Es Refugi. Its our local bar and we've been hoping that no-one would find out about it.

Got to agree with Smiddy on this one. From lurking on this forum for a couple of years it seems to me that most posters are very passionate about PP retainiing its Mallorcan charm. Bonys is as far removed from Mallorcan charm as it gets. Crowded, tacky and expensive are some of the kinder adjectives that can be applied to Bonys. I passed by it recently and it had a sign outside stating "closed Tuesday, boys legover". Maybe my humour isn't what it used to be but thats the type of thing that you would expect to see in Magaluf or Santa Ponsa. Maybe its a sign of the times but I certainly wouldn't frequent with the family a restaurant in the UK where the proprietor rolls up his trousers with clothes pegs at the bottom of them and throws sweets to the kids. "Not forever" says Bony? The sooner the better says I.

Hi Rab
You are a very brave man to post such a reply here about Bonys, it has become a PP institution, and you may get a few replys. I think anyone who has been there a few times will start to regard Jose as a friend and feel at home there. Jose is an eccentric and I think would stand out where ever he was, as for some of his signs I would put it down to the language differences after all how many of us can speak Spanish fluently?
I think its a balance thing, we also visit local bars, one thing for the price, you are paying a premium where ever you drink in the square. So I agree there are better places to go to, but not many you can beat for the 'cabaret'.
Jose is a one off, and Bonys is too, I have 15 years of memories of going there and wouldn't change a day of them.
So try other bars out, there are plenty to choose from, but you must try Bonys, it will be an evening to remember, and with so many changes going on in the resort, it is good to know that Jose will be there entertaining the crowds as usual.
