Default Schweppes “Original” Tónica in Spain

Bad news for any G&T lovers like me. Schweppes “Original” Tónica made by its continental European owners Suntory of Japan (Coca-Cola own and make it in the UK) have changed the “original” recipe for their Spanish made product and while it still contains [some] sugar it is now full of acesulfame potassium sweetener.

To say it now tastes dreadful to those of us averse to ‘light’, ‘zero’ or ‘diet’ artificially sweetened sodas would be too polite .

I need to find another tipple of choice!

I’m a big fan of ‘full fat’ Fever Tree Tonic but its availability in the bars and restaurants around the Port is sporadic. Most places only tend to have one tonic choice and the main one is the now ruined (!) Spanish Schweppes “Original” Tónica.

Royal Bliss and Nordic (both Coca-Cola brands in Spain) served as the main tonic in some bars are sweetened while Blue Tonic Water by Kas served as the main variety in other places is very sweet with glucose and fructose.

Stay has been serving Italian Schweppes “Original” for the past 9 months or so which remains unadulterated and the Illa d’Or has offered Schwepees Premium which doesn’t have a sweetener in sight for the past few years so I’m hoping that remains the case!

When will people learn .. these man made chemical substitutes must be far better for you than a natural (albeit, industrially refined) product
