It was with great anticipation that we booked a table at Ca n'Olesa for our first night in Pollenca, as this was the first time we'd been back since 2008 and my daughter, especially, had fond memories of their pizzas, which she loved at the age of 12!
I'm glad we booked, because the restaurant was very busy, and we were seated right by the wall of the building, giving us a good view over the square.
It's a whole different animal going on holiday with a now 23 and 19 year old! Back then, (aged 12 and 8) their needs were simple - a quick meal and back to play in the square with the other children, but my two now have much more sophisticated tastes, and palates to match! My daughter, Sophie, is virtually vegetarian at home and she was looking forward to sampling the Padron peppers, so two plates of these were ordered as starters to share. We also enjoyed bread, olives and aioli and little squares of what I think was Boca?
Sophie and I liked the peppers but hubby said they weren't very tasty - he remembers them as being more salty before, and of course, we never had any hot ones! We did all agree that a little more salt would have improved them.
I ordered a bottle of Mortitx Blanc which I shared with Sophie - both of us thought it was delicious. The men had beers, but the restaurant only served them in tiny bottles, so they went through quite a few over the course of the evening!
Our main courses consisted of rabbit and onions for hubby, pizzas for the (adult) children and the skewered chicken in a five spice sauce for me. Hubby was bitterly disappointed with his rabbit which came served in a watery soup. He maintains it had already escaped by the time it reached the table as he couldn't find any meat!
My chicken was very tender but the five spice sauce really cried out for Chinese veggie rice or maybe fried noodles rather than the diced potatoes and vegetables it came with.
Three of us had desserts - Hubby ordered a plate of Mallorcan cheeses with crusty bread, some of which he palmed off on Sophie and I. My son, Mike, had chocolate brownie with ice-cream while Sophie enjoyed a slice of lemon meringue.
We found the service attentive and friendly and I recognised the female maitre'd from years ago so it looks like it's under the same ownership?
Overall, we were slightly disappointed with the meals - the pizzas were OK, but nothing special and over the next few nights we enjoyed food that was of a much better standard at other restaurants. It was quite interesting to see that on subsequent evenings, there were quite a few empty tables at the restaurant, but maybe we just made the wrong choices with the food. Sometimes, it's not a good idea to have too high expectations!
The bill came to 145 euros, not including a tip.
