Cafe L'Algar/Voss

Heard on the old grapevine that Cafe L'Algar is to become a fusion restaurant!
Anyone else heard anything?

PP76 20-02-2017 23:25

While having dinner in Centric last week we were told it was changing to a restaurant, not sure which type.

Sparky 21-02-2017 00:04

I know a lot of major work has been done during the winter.

tangofan 21-02-2017 11:30

Sparky, I vaguely remember this being part of Grupo Boulevard - is that correct?

There's a post from 2012 that lists the Grupo Boulevard interests

The "Tex Mex" is Grupo Boulevard. It has five Dakotas in all (one in Pto Alcudia, two in Playa de Muro plus the two in Pto Pollensa, two Gran Cafes (one also in Playa de Muro), three tabacs (Pto Pollensa, Pto Alcudia, Playa de Muro), Cafe Algar, the Voss shops, two shopping centres in Playa de Muro (where they are based). And of course the "popular" restaurant at which David Cameron enjoyed lunch.
And one from 2015

Grupo Boulevard are a Playa de Muro based corporation.

According to their website, in addition to Luxury Villa sales and rentals, they own the Voss chain of shops seen around the north of the island along with Café 1919, the Dakota and Santa Fe Tex Mex restaurants, C'an Pescador at the start of the Pine Walk, O'Haras and the Australian Boulevard pubs to name but a few.

They also used to own Los Pescadores restaurant on the Pine Walk but redeveloped that into an apartment building now called Edificio Boulevard where a certain famous cyclist now lives a lot of the time.

That's a shame. Often enjoy a late evening coffee there people watching and watching the antics of Jose!!

Bekki 25-02-2017 10:35

That's a shame as it was a good place for a cocktail and a place we would meet up with friends. Sad:(

I agree, we often had an after dinner drink there, and although we like Bonys too, we found prices a bit cheaper at Cafe L'Algar.

Does anyone else feel that there is a bit of a shortage of places where you can sit outside and just have a drink in the evening? I can only really think of Bonys, the Lemon Lounge and that other bar at the far end of the square (near the playground). Everywhere else seems focused on food in the evenings. Or am I missing something?

Sparky 25-02-2017 17:41

Only Bar Manolo but there are plenty of others just off the square ;).

kcdc230 25-02-2017 19:34

Yes that is a shame. We could hear building work going on inside when we walked past when we were over at the beginning of the month, but just assumed it was prep work for the new season.

It has always been the 'go to' place for our first drink and club sandwich of the holiday, usually before we've even been able to get in to the villa or wherever else we are staying. We've also used it as a location for meeting up with friends and late arriving family.

Mrs kcdc230 just wants to know where else she's going to be able to get her Virgin Collada now!

But, who's to say that it's replacement won't be even better - at least it's not closing as an eatery altogether.

ragdollabbi 25-02-2017 22:00

It was the first place we had lunch in, on our first visit to the Port, but must admit don't use it much now.

I find the same but especially on the front - only really Hotel Daina - am I wrong?

tangofan 26-02-2017 13:37

I think most places will serve drinks only later on in the evening once they empty out a bit of diners. We always go to Pascalino for a late drink or three, this place is very under rated I think. Always very welcoming and good for those on a budget. Also Joker next door though they do seem to close quite early sometimes. Both these are in an excellent location on the front.

There are so many places along the front competing that I am sure if there was an empty table and you asked for drinks only they wouldn't turn you away.

Disorderly 26-02-2017 19:41

Ah Joker Bar...,,,,!!

Sparky 10-03-2017 15:14

A FB friend has given me permission to share this photo of the progress at Cafe L'Algar :-

It's a rainy day so i have been surfing the net. Found a restaurant in Muro called Fusion 19 and it's owned by Grupo Boulevard, you can download the menu but there are no prices ;).

tangofan 24-03-2017 19:29

Very good detective work Sparky!

Are they moving the Voss Shop to the square so they can open a restaurant in the old location on the front?

Sparky 30-03-2017 09:20

All i know is that it is not yet possible to see what is going on inside, maybe it will be a restaurant called 'Voss' ;);) it could just be a re-branding thing.

kate1 30-03-2017 16:26

The Muro restaurant does have a couple of prices on the website (for specials and the tasting menu, which is 38Euros) - the other prices seem broadly comparable to a more high-end restaurant such as Iru or Marina Brasserie. If that is what it's going to be like, it's very different from Dakota!

I think you might be right branding it's just strange the voss signs have gone up. I was told in 1919 yesterday it's going to be a restaurant but that could mean anything.

lollipop 31-03-2017 21:47

Im sure I spotted racks like they would have in a shop.

Sparky 31-03-2017 23:12

Once again i think we will have to wait and see :).

James 01-04-2017 14:14

I walked past it a couple of hours ago and work on it was still going on in earnest.

It is looking like a 'premium' branded outlet and it has very prominent 'Voss' branding (i.e. Grupo Boulevard). Inside is a long bar with a beer tap installed and posh artwork painted on the walls themselves including a very large Dove.

sws97sdg 01-04-2017 17:58

Sounds interesting, it's always nice to have a few new places each visit to try out!!

Matt&Deb 08-04-2017 16:24

Hi there, restaurant is now open. Looks to be lovely fitted out with a very appetising menu. Have a table booked for tonight, so will update after our visit :)

CathB 09-04-2017 13:20

Looked in today - good daytime snack menu plus an evening menu. Not over priced either 😃

Bekki 09-04-2017 17:44

Looking forward to seeing the changes and hopefully enjoying a meal in the next few days. :)

lollipop 12-04-2017 14:04

If 2.35 for a coffee is not overpriced I don't know what is, much better value elsewhere.

Just giving you an opportunity to reach 2000 posts Lollipop ;)

lollipop 13-04-2017 15:31

I didn't even realise that !!!

Matt&Deb 14-04-2017 08:53

We had a very nice evening on its opening night.
Food is in a tapas style, in that you order up as many dishes as you would like, not knowing the portion sizes for each dish a little tricky - but friendly waiting staff and Pacu front of house very helpful. My husband particularly enjoyed the mini steamed bun with pork belly, whilst my favourite was the Asian style chicken wraps.
Very smart contemporary setting with great wine selection, we will be back again soon to try some more dishes for sure :)

copper 14-04-2017 11:02

I always find that with Tapas unless it is a regular haunt you dont know how much you will get !

We actually order some then see what we get then order more if we want it Got caught in where we go at Xmas on the Costa del Sol where we didnt realise they gave you a Tapas with evey drink but we ordered a bottle of wine and had enough Serrano Ham for the whole Restaurant with it !! We go there reg now and they always offer to pack things up for you to go home We still got caught ordering Aubergines in honey and that was a family sized portion !!

Looking forward ro trying all these new places in PP

Whereabouts in the Costa del Sol copper?

copper 15-04-2017 17:35

We stay In Arroyo de la Miel every Christmas

It is inland if you dont know it just above Benalamdena Lovely place proper working Spanish town Some nice Spanish Bars that make you very welcome and very very busy at night and then hopefully some sunshine down on the coast in the day 6days on the beach this last Christmas

Another advantage is it has a train station

Yes, I must admit it given me much amusement over the years when you see a couple order 5 or 6 dishes and out comes a shipping order. The look on their faces can be priceless.:)
