Default New local wine

Whilst on holiday we discovered a new local wine called Mortitx.

We first drank it in La Fonda after the owner of our villa told us about it. We tried the Merlot and found it delicious, fruity and full-bodied.

Here's some more information:

I managed to buy a bottle to take home at Ensenat in Pollensa town for about 8 euros.

Cheers!

Default New Wine from a Pollensa Vineyard

Try the white!
A very pale wine, but with a great flavour.
No wonder you could get the wine at Ensenat....he is a partner in the vineyard!!!!

Cheers!

Hi Frito,

Yes, the wine is on prominent display in the shop and I was glad because I wanted to take some home with me.

I could spend hours in there!

Default Mortitx Wines

I visited the Mortitx vineyard recently.
It is in a somewhat inaccessible situation off the road from Pollensa towards Lluch.
I don't think they are doing tours yet. The situation is amazing. The vineyard is a whole valley. I think they are growing four types of wine, and it is possible to stand in the middle of the vineyard and meet all four varieties.
The winery is high tech and is run by two young people from the mainland who certainly know what they are doing. The wine-making process can be controlled from one central computer screen, which is the only system of its type in Mallorca.
The money for this exciting venture has been provided by business men from Pollenca, so it's a bit of a local project, and as such I think it's worth supporting,
so I'm going to open another bottle of the white!!!!!

Cheers!

Frito.

I opened my one remaining bottle of Mallorcan wine the other night to go with a leg of roast lamb.

The Mortitx Merlot 2004 was delicious and went really well with the lamb. It was fruity and easy-drinking and I detected hints of licqorice and chocolate!

Well worth bringing some home!

Oh we so wanted to visit this vinyard the other week, but because of the impossibility of bringing anything home via handluggage - and not being stupid enough to put it in our case - we decided not to be tempted. How stupid - I wish we had gone to it and drunk it during the week! Oh well, boys over in Jan so we will get them to bring some back if restrictions lifted!

Hi Belladonna,

I'm seriously tempted to start an import business for Mallorcan wines. They're just getting better and better and I've never been able to find any in the UK.

I no longer work at the Wine Shop but my boss was a big fan too and loved the wines I took in to let him taste.

The only problem is shipping:rolleyes .

If anyone knows of anywhere to buy them in the UK, please let me know!

Hi Belladonna,

When I worked in the wine shop we imported a lot of wine from Languedoc in the South of France which was obviously costly.

But to ship from Mallorca you would have to factor in the cost of shipping by sea (across to Barcelona) which would further push the prices up.

My boss loved the Mallorcan wine and when I told him how much it was on the island, he reckoned that to make a profit and cover shipping costs, etc, you would need to sell the wine for about £10-£15. Or even more depending on which producer it was and how expensive it was in Mallorca.

I'm not sure if people would be prepared to pay that sort of money for a Mallorcan wine when they have the choice of other excellent wines from Spain for less.

Mallorca wines have a lot of competition but I love them. I think I'll just have to settle for bringing a few bottles home when I go and drinking them sparingly!
