Default Traffic calming? (Tree in the middle of the road)

Carrer de l'Ham (off Carrer de la Xarxa)
Interesting road feature - traffic calming?

The street light opposite the tree has the glass top broken off and wire hanging, probably knocked off by a large truck squeezing through the gap..

A different older view from February 2011 when the street light had a light on the top,

The positioning of the street lamp on the edge of the kerb, parallel with the tree trunk does smack of someone in the highways department having a giggle.

I've driven past the tree and I find that it quite charming that it is in the middle of the road. It must pre-date the buildings on a very quiet road, and is certainly more attractive than the garish plastic bollards and humps that are de-rigeur in the UK.

If feeling like you are driving through a forest makes you naturally slow down, then perhaps it is an great idea waiting to catch-on!

Maybe the tree has a preservation order on it, i can't think of any other reason why they would build a road around it .

Hi, yes that's the road we live on and we have to avoid the tree all the time. As far as I know there is a preservation order on that one and several of those that were there before building began on Avenida de Paris. Our friends visiting us cannot believe the tree when they see it. Thankfully Spain has a tolerance of such things despite EC Health & Safety regulations. Maybe the council could put a smidging of yellow paint on or a small reflective panel? On the other hand there are no signs of impact.

SWs,

It's daft to have a tree like that in that position......It should be a lovely big 400kV Pylon! complete with 4 x conductors per phase.

Cheers,

Jimbo

It looks even more mad in your photo than it actually does in real life! Planners here in UK would have a nervous breakdown if they saw it.
