I did not realise this either. Made me check (we are okay until 2011)?

wonder if you get a reminder about this.

Looking recently at our EHIC's they expire on 1st December, so have just done the renewal application using the link below.

It's stated that the renewal card should be with us in seven days (Postal strikes permitting)!

You'll need your existing card for a PIN reference shown on it and also your National Insurance Number, to make your renewal application.

The renewal cards arrived today, by second class post.

No probs re postal strikes then!

Expiry 29/10/14 so 5 years from date of renewal application.

Scarlett, They're usually pretty good with re-newing them, 3 weeks should be plenty of time.

Can I just remind everyone to check the expiry date on their European Health Insurance Cards. According to 'Martins Money tips' 6 million will be out of date in first half of 2011.

Smiddy,

Get them, just as a back up. Some insurance companies will not pay out if you do not have one.

the hospital at Alcudia were not interested in UK E111 cards when we had to visit the
(Sun Sea &) A&E a couple of years ago, would only treat on production of travel insurance details, & then only after getting authorisation from their UK helpline.

Thereafter, couldn't fault the service, well, except that all the Spanish patients got seen first.

When I queried use of the E111 card, they said that the public hospital in Palma would honour them, but that that was the nearest reciprocal facility.

The pharmacist in Alcudia opened up at 1 in the morning for us, though, & I love being able to buy my repeat 'prescription only in UK' medicines in PP for a few euros a box, so the local system has it's advantages.

I suppose the moral is, don't rely on E111 card, & take out a suitable medical expenses travel policy.

You will need an E111 card if you need to visit one of the local drop-in clinics for a more minor medical problem though - for example if you need a prescription. My husband had a chest infection a couple of years ago - he'd forgotten his card and the cost of the consultation was about 50E, I think. It would have been free had he had his card... so well worth getting one.

Emmalou, not a drop in clinic but there is a medical centre in C/Vicenc Buades. If you show your EHIC they will make you an appointment with a doctor. However if it is urgent you will need to go to the PACS in Pollensa.
