I would also endorse Caixa and in particular Anna Maria. She is excellent and speaks perfect English

I hesitate to recommend anything nowadays, but when you're next in PP it may be worth popping in to Banca March. From my limited dealings, I've found them very helpful ..

Banca March for me and I have tried most of them. They are good and more importantly safe. They are a privately owned bank.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I will call into La Caixa, Banca March and maybe Santander when I return to the Port in June to get up-to-date charges.

We use Bankia who do not charge if a balance of €2,000 is kept in the account. Most of the staff speak excellent English as well, especially Paula who is our 'personal banker'.

We closed an account with what was then Bancaixa. The balance was several thousand euros. No problem. Just be safe obviously 😐

I wonder if you will end up having to pay a 'charge' to close your account - like I did when I closed my account with the Santander branch in the port.

I'd had several ongoing issues with the branch. Even though the staff there seemed nice - they never managed to sort out some of my direct debit payments, resulting in 'red demands' from some of the utility companies when I arrived in the port. So it was a bit of a bitter pill to be charged for closing the account there.....

You can always email them 23206@targobank.es or phone and ask to talk to Marta who speaks good English and is always very helpful.
