Default Documents needed to open a resident bank account

Hi, does anybody have any info on the documents needed to open a resident bank account here & any suggestions on which bank.
We both have U.K accounts but need to open a Spanish account with a card reader available for taking card payments abywhere. When we registered at town hall we were told that it would be a straight forward process but after visiting Santander it appears to be quite complex due to new legislations being pushed upon the Spanish by U.K government!
They are asking for proof of employment from employer here in Majorca & tax records but I tried explaining that I still work for a U.K based company 10 days a month & an in the process of setting up a self employed business here in Pollenca but couldn't really get anywhere with them.. A little confused as surely there are a lot of fortunate people here that have relocated without the need of having to work but who have still opened accounts without any employer info.
Does anybody have any recent dealings with banks or any advice as the Internet seems to say a whole lot of different things. Thanks

Oh dear things must have changed a lot recently, when we moved over we went to Santander with our landlord's help and opened a non residents account, only needed our passports, then when we eventually got our residents certificates we took them to the bank and they changed everything over to a "full" account, it was so simple.
Maybe it's more complicated because you need a business account, sorry but i can't help you with that .

I opened a business account in PP over 10 years ago! At that time the only bank who would do it from a distance was the Credito Balear now Targobank - so I'm still with them. As I run a Limited company I had to supply my corporation documents etc. and then finalised everything when we next came over.

Based on what I've heard, I would suggest - especially if you are going to be working in Spain - that you find a good 'gestor' who can help you with your paperwork, accounts, tax returns etc. Perhaps someone can recommend one.

Self-employment is also very different to the UK and there appears to be a fixed rate of 'national insurance' regardless of earnings.

Thanks all for the replies. We will post the process when we eventually get there, for any future queries.
