Tips for Soller train please

Please does anyone have any tips on the Soller train and tram?
How long does it take to get to Sopller by bus from PP?

I would like to visit Palma to the see the cathedral - is the Soller train the best way to visit from PP?

You can also just get the bus into palma direct from the port which is really good value - think around 12 or 13 euros return. Its not too far to walk from placa espanya to the cathedral and lovely to meander through the streets.

The train is great fun with fantastic views. We have usually caught the train in Bunyola. There has always been enough parking space there and it saves driving into Palma. The stretch of the journey from Bunyola to Soller is the most scenic part. The tram leaves from directly outside Soller station and will take you to Port de Soller. Enjoy.

Do have a look at the previous posts as the basic trip has not changed although the bus stop in Puerto Soller has a tendency to move! Timetables can be found here Transport in Puerto Pollensa, Majorca - taxis, bus, trains, airport transfers

As commented in those posts I don't think that you would have time to visit both Palma and do the complete Soller trip with train & tram in one day. For Palma, the Open Top bus is a good way to get an overview and you can get on & off e.g. at the Cathedral.

Another option which we did last year was to use No Frills Excursions and do their Island Tour Island tour (with bus, train, boat and tram) We did this last spring and have recommended it to several friends & family since.

Think we first visited Majorca in the 70s and drove to Soller a few times and caught the tram down but never did the train trip but we are staying in Palma next spring and are definately going to do it !!

Definately recommend a trip to Palma for you if it isnt too hot It is much busier than it used to be because of all the cruise ships You can find out their visits online normally We did that last time we went to Venice as best to avoid if you can as the old part of Palma has lots of steps and narrow streets

In November we drove to Sa Pobla (can you get a bus to there?) and caught the train into Palma from there. The station is next to the platform for the old train to Soller, so an easy connect if you can get to Sa Pobla station easily.

We've done that as well. The train to Palma makes a nice change although we all had to change trains after a few stops at Enllac. Checking the timetable you have to do that on every trip. I think it's because the older train just runs between Sa Pobla & Enllac. See the timetable at https://www.tib.org/portal/en/web/ctm/tren/linia/T2

I don't think that you can get a bus to Sa Pobla anymore. Several years ago they ran one that connected with the train but then stopped it.

There's a direct bus to Soller/port de Soller from PP, it leaves PP around 10:00. The route takes you through the mountains, with fantastic views and stops at Lluc for about 30 mins. Rather than catch the one bus back at 15:00, we usually take the old train from Soller down into Palma and catch the 340 bus back up to PP this gives you more time to explore Soller.

Note; the train now runs directly from Soller into Palma.

That would be an interesting way to do the trip as we have always done it the other way round - but as you say you then have to get the 15:00 bus back to PP from Puerto Soller.

Agree with the previous two posts. The bus over the mountains to PSoller (you go through the outskirts of Soller on way) is fabulous...the views are incredible. Then tram from PSoller into Soller - then old train into Palma, again fantastic.
No way should you "do" Palma on same day, far too much(inc. cathedral) to do, I adore the city.

We're thinking of this trip with the family in July but with two grandchildren (10 &. 9). Has anyone seen other children on this day long tour?

We usually come to PP with our daughter, son-in-law, and 2 grandchildren and my husband and I always treat ourselves to a day in Soller. We usually take the 10 am bus from PP and the 3 pm bus back. The buses are fully air-conditioned and very comfortable and the drive through the mountains is wonderful. However, the 3 hours in Soller is never quite enough time to wander and have lunch. We always feel a little rushed.

So, the last time we did it we got up early and got the 7 pm bus from PP to Palma. Waiting for the bus in the quiet of the early morning sunshine was a wonderful start to the day. We arrived in Palma about 8.30 and toddled along for breakfast at the café at the station for the little narrow gauge railway to Soller – as that was the only place we knew of in Palma! No doubt there are other options..

Now, we’ve done the train journey through the mountains and it is truly magical but….being somewhat past our prime we found the seats hard and I found the summer heat in the open carriage a bit uncomfortable.

So, we decided to take the 210 bus from the Palma bus station to Soller. This bus does not go through the tunnel. It goes up the west coast, via Valldemossa, through lovely scenery and great views of the sea. It leaves at 9.30 and arrives in Soller about 11 am – a whole hour before we would have arrived by the bus from PP. After a delicious, freshly-squeezed orange juice at the unprepossessing Station Café we made our way to the centre of Soller, where we used that extra hour to browse the little shops before they closed at 1 pm. After a relaxed lunch in Café Scholl, we had time for a visit to Can Prunera, a wonderful art nouveau house which has been restored and turned into a museum of modernist Spanish art, before wending our way back to the bus station to catch the 3 pm bus through the mountains, arriving in PP at 5 pm.

It was a lovely day and as much of it was spent on comfortable buses looking out the window at glorious scenery, it wasn’t tiring. I think your grandchildren would enjoy it, Enjay, if they, too, enjoy looking at the scenery. Not all of my grandchildren do!

Whaleywander’s way of getting the bus from PP and the little train down to Palma would make it a slightly longer day but would give you more time in Soller.

Whichever way you choose, it’s a great day out!
