Default Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie !!!!

Been a funny last week, the Autumn Equinox is nearly on us and it’s been storms, rain and sun all the way. Bonyladette and I have been caught out dining a la fresco twice and although not particularly interesting per se, the reactions of our fellow diners well worth a post. In fact an absolute mine of research for an anthropologist.

The big storm hit last Sunday, after a lovely lunch on the terrace at Al Canada Golf Course. ( Check it out , lovely position and vista even if you just go for a coffee. Just wear decent gear and act confident ). Well we’re just through pudding when the big dark clouds come rolling in. The wind starts swirling and it’s obvious that the skies are about to open.

Now us Brits have three key social characteristics;
• An embarassment/unease to those who serve us
• “ Let’s not make a fuss” syndrome.
• A basic sense of fair play.

So, what happens. The Spanish just move undercover with their napkins tucked into their shirts. Us Brits,immediately assist the panicking staff by clearing tables, bringing the cushions in doors , shouting encouragement. The Germans watch for two minutes then sensing they can’t be outdone by the Brits , join in with much gusto. Great way of social bonding cos whilst the spanish settle down to their continuing meal the Germans and the Brits spend the next two hours backslapping and drinking beer together at the bar whilst the rain abates enough to reach the car.

Fast forward to Thursday evening. We hadn’t checked the art out recently in Pollenca so early evening jaunt around a couple of gallaries . Few witty pieces available so an aperitif in the square and onto Piccolo Forno for a plate of their finest sea food pasta and a bottle of good rioja. Said it before, but worth repeating if there is better italian food in the north of Mallorca, I’ve yet to eat it.

Settling down to our fine food, we are joined on the next ( outer table) by six well heeled local matriachs ( you could tell they were well heeled by their expensive coiffeured hair and clothes).

Well then the lightning broke. Completely unperturbed three of them started clapping their hands in that silly seal like way a la Amanda Holden, whilst the other three tapped their wine glasses with the cutlery. Expecting the waiting staff to immediately lower the plastic walling around them, they kept up the din for some minutes. BLT and I ( Brit’s you see) covered our eyes in total horror and embarassment. To our amazement the staff appeared , did the necessary and what was significant was that the staff were not at all amazed by what we considered gross rudeness.

Anyway, the big one (storm) is due tonight so we are off to the Terrace at the Illa D’Or . Should be a few tales in that !!!!

BonysLad

Totally agree on the Piccolo Forno!! OH says its the best seafood risotto hes had outside of Italy, and I can vouch for their pizze as well!! Hopefully will be making them our 'first and last nighter' in a couple of weeks! (Everything crossed!)

Loved the post BL, its great comparing social differences between countries, what is acceptable to one group and not to another always surprises doesnt it?! Takes a "storm" of any sort to force us to co-operate.

I remember a similar "plastic" experience up at La Terraza as the storm picked up - it was a show in itself!

Agree with Piccalo Forno, an unpretentious pop in type exterior, but food to feed the soul.

Roll on Illa D'Or!
