Default Ca'n Moncho - new restaurant review

Carrer de la Llevant 14 has had a rather chequered past with the demise of 'The Codfather' and Cafe Llevant. However it has undergone a transformation and is now Ca'n Moncho and if our recent experience is anything to go by will be the place to go for that special meal..

The owner, Christian and family have previously run a seafood restaurant in Port d'Alcudia until the financial crash and more lately a restaurant opposite the town hall in Alcudia, With his wife, they have completely redesigned the old Cafe Llevant and have made a wonderful job in renovating and updating it. The front section consists of a series of arched nooks which would make for warm and intimate dining out-of-season. The rear courtyard has had a real make-over – mature planting, fountain and subtle lighting. Together they have created a wonderful ambience. This is matched with both the friendly and professional service and of course the food. The cuisine is pure Spanish and heavily weighted to a Galician style of cuisine (including many of the wines and beers).

The menu is small – just 10 starters, 10 mains (5 fish and 5 meat)and 4 desserts (all home made cakes). The mains are priced at between 14 and 20 euros. The house wine is very acceptable and even more enjoyable at a very reasonable 12 euros a bottle. The starters are huge, so my tip is to do what the Spanish do and order one to share.

We had two very different mains - a very unusual cold monk fish and prawn dish and veal cheeks in red wine. Both were absolutely delicious and totally clean plates were returned. The home made cakes as tasty as anticipated.

Although the restaurant has only been open a month, all of the 40 odd covers in the courtyard were full, adding to the friendly atmosphere of the evening.

No doubt the star dish at Ca'n Moncho is the seafood platter. It comes in at a hefty 70 euros but it contains a huge pile of red prawns, mussels, razor clams, shellfish etc. which although designed for 2 people seemed to satisfy tables of 3 or 4 customers. Over half the people there had ordered this dish.

Ca'n Moncho is closed every Wednesday – with evening service the rest of the week plus Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes. The owner's intention is to remain open out of season.

Overall a wonderful addition to fine dining in the port and one that has a focus on regional Spanish cuisine.

Highly recommended.
